Western Canada's Jane Cotter Combines Work and Play

By Virginia Leeming

Never sweat it! Keep focused, forget about your clothing and concentrate on the game knowing that come rain or shine, you are perfectly suited for the weather. For a golf designer like Jane Cotter whose collection HB Goff sells throughout Canada at Golf Town Retail locations, comfort and looking good go hand in hand. She knows today's savvy women golfers don't compromise when it comes to style. Not only should the clothes offer supreme comfort, they must look as good on or off the greens.

At HB Golf's design studio in Vancouver Jane and her brother Ted Cotter oversee several athletic collections. With more than 20 years in the business, they know a thing or two about fit, fabric, technical properties and of course colors and patterns. Jane's enthusiam for golf has become the driving force behind the design of the collection, now going into its seventh year.

"Almost all our fabrics are exclusively stretch," she says, " this offers both comfort and a more body-conscious silhouette." The spring line uses Bengaline, pinwale cords, twills, suede sherpa for cozy, chill proof vests and jackets and technical fabrics such as Kool Wik for tops in Supplex (a polyester) which wicks perspiration to the fabric's surface. Some fabrics are coated with Dintex for a windproof and waterproof yet breathable cloth used for jackets. Peached Microfibre defies the rain while offering a beautiful soft surface. And for the sun-sensitive golfer, there are UV protection fabrics that continue to screen out the harmful rays wash after wash. Makes sense.

Can all these properties still offer great style? You bet. Jane's sense of what works and what you'll love to wear are as accurate as a hole in one. Most groups comprise shorts, flirty skorts, Capri's, vests, jackets and comfy knit tops with a variety of up-to-date styling details. Colors include luscious tones of shrimp, apple, saxe (periwinkle), blue, black, and taupe and an eye-catching white hibiscus flower print on red or black cotton. Jane says she likes to slip away from the job to play a round of golf now and then. Whoops, I should say – to do a little research. Now isn't that a perfect job.
